Recently, the hotel turned a nuisance into an environmentally friendly and cost efficient solution. Over 16,000 gallons of groundwater run beneath the hotel and before the installation of a geothermal heating and cooling loop in 2010, had to be constantly pumped away from the hotel. Working with Nelson Mechanical Design (NMD) the hotel installed a geothermal water loop that harness waste heat-solar energy that has warmed the hotel’s 48 rooms- which is transferred and stored in the previously unusable ground water. The thermal energy now heats the hotel’s 75-yard indoor pool. This July, the heat exchanger was upgraded and the new unit, weighing over two tons is projected to drastically reduce Mansion House Inn’s carbon footprint. Using a unique bypass valve, NMD was also able to extend the geothermal loops heating ability to ten months out of the year, meaning the hotel pool and heating systems can utilize the unique free thermal energy almost year round. In addition to the geothermal loop, Mansion House also uses the following green initiatives: Biodegradable cleaning and housekeeping products. Single-stream recycling including all cardboard, flatware and plates used at the hotel. 100% biodegradable plastic cups. Energy efficient LEED certified light bulbs. Individual climate control in all guest rooms that utilizes centralized computing and detection software to ensure vacant rooms are not being heated or cooled and wasting energy. Mansion House Inn has also been named the number one Green Hotel on Martha’s Vineyard by TripAdvisor.
